If you’re anything like me, you like to change up the look of your home from time to time. Unfortunately, that habit can get expensive. Today though, I’m here to share with you inexpensive ways to change the look of your home.

Maybe you’re a seasonal decorator, or you like to bust out the festive touches for the holidays. Again, that habit is expensive! Plus, where the heck are you supposed to store all of this stuff? Fortunately, there are less expensive ways to change things up that might seem subtle, but can make a big impact on the look of your home.

Pillow Covers

I think one of my absolute favorite ways to switch up the way a space looks is by swapping out pillow covers. I used to buy new pillows every time I would change my decor, or change my mind about a color scheme. As you can guess, I ended up with a closet full of throw pillows that didn’t always get used.

Obviously, this was not practical. Fortunately, there’s many many (yes that’s 2 “manys”) stores, websites, and small business owners that make and sell pillow covers for every vibe, color scheme, and holiday. This allows you to only have to store the extra covers, and you can quickly swap them out when the mood strikes. Check out some that I like below.

Art

Now, don’t have a knee jerk reaction to my next suggestion, but art is another easy way to completely change the look and feel of a space. Sometimes people hear the word “art” and their minds immediately go to pieces that are crazy expensive. It doesn’t have to be that way!

I love Society6 for wall art. They have absolutely everything! I always tell people that art is the place where you should let your personality shine. Don’t buy what you think you should, buy what you love! You can check Society6 out here https://society6.com/wall-art

You can find awesome prints for every style at great prices online.

Bonus Tip!

If you don’t want the hassle of buying extra frames, just buy one set of frames. Buy the sizes you want, for the places you plan to hang your art, and then just stick to buying prints in those sizes.

For example, you buy 2 frames that are 18″ x 24″, 3 frames that are 12″ x 18″, and 3 frames that are 24″ x 36″.

This way, whenever you’re feeling the winds of change blowing, you can just swap out the prints. One thing to note- when storing extra prints, I strongly recommend that you don’t bend them at all. You likely won’t be able to get out any creases.

Wall Decals

Next up, and this might be one of special interest to renters, is peel and stick decals! Now, depending on the size and brand of these, they can absolutely get pricey, but there are plenty of affordable options, and they are a fun way to add character to a wall and make your home look really unique.

I used ones from Target on the laundry space in my apartment, pictured below, and they were only $5! I have seen decals in so many different shapes, patterns, and colors that you’re bound to find something that you like. They are great for kids rooms as well if your kiddo wants a change, but their ideas are a bit too bold for anything permanent.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the Target ones on their website, so I linked decals from Amazon down below. They are almost the exact same!

My major recommendation to you is that you make sure you read that the decals are easy peel off and leave no residue. I also strongly recommend reading reviews so that you can see if other people are commenting that they had a problem getting the decals off of their wall. The idea of these is to spice up your space, not ruin your walls.

Rugs

A home décor item that I have fallen in love with, and swear by, are rugs. A lot of my Insta friends love changing out their rugs because it’s a quick way to make a change without much fuss. Not only do rugs pull together a room, but they are also typically more comfortable than a hard floor.

I personally love RugsUSA because they are so many options and they constantly have sales! Check their area rugs out here https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/control/search-rugs

Plus, rugs are great because they can really bring out different tones in your other home decor items, and vice versa. If I intend to swap the rugs around in my home, I tend to buy similar tones so that they can all look good in any room that I put them in.

The patterns are different and the colors aren’t exactly the same, because obviously I don’t want to feel like I’m buying the same rug over and over, but keeping it in the color family helps its versatility.

Buy a Thrifted Piece

If you follow me regularly, you know that I love to go thrifting. It’s not just a great way to save money, but it also can give your home a really unique look. Flea markets bring together people from all over, and that means the things they’re selling can be really unique.

This dresser was thrifted for only $15!

Plus, I have found pieces of furniture that were in new condition for next to nothing!

The bonus of buying thrifted items is that you can always resell them, but if you don’t, you won’t feel like you can’t get rid of them because they were expensive. These glass shelves cost me only $15 and I can style them differently to change the look of my room.

I wrote a piece about tips for thrifting furniture you can check out here https://thisgirlathome.com/tips-for-thrifting-furniture/

There are countless ways to change up your space without making a major committment, but these are some of my favorites. I’ve built up a little collection of these items over time and I’m at the point where I can swap things around in different rooms if I want to change the look of my space without spending more money.

Comment below and tell me what home decor items you collect to change the look of your space!

  1. What great ideas! I love how much easier it is these days to create a space that looks chic and expensive on a limited budget – I think I’m going to try the pillow covers, wall prints, and wall decals first. Another option when swapping out the prints is buying wallpaper and cutting it (if necessary) to the size of the frame. Thanks for a great post and new inspo!
